Parent Involvement

It is difficult to measure in numbers, but no less critical for parents/families and schools to work together to support student learning. Research has found that when schools work together with families to support learning, children tend to succeed not just in school, but throughout life.

Following are some questions to ask about parent/family involvement.

Does your school district have a written parent/family involvement policy?
Is there a comprehensive communications program to communicate district policies, programs and priorities with the parents and the community?
Are principals and other staff members held accountable for involving parents and the community in the schools?
Is support from the central office provided for school parent/family involvement efforts?
Do schools have to outline parent involvement programs in their school improvement plans?
Is training offered for school staff members on involving parents and communities in schools?
Are parents and communities surveyed to determine their views of the schools?
Is there a recognition program for parents and others who are particularly supportive of public schools?
